We’ve all had those spontaneous moments — the ones where, for no specific reason, you decide to break routine. Maybe you grab your morning coffee from a different place, or take an alternate route home. Most of the time, these decisions are minor and forgettable. But once in a while, they lead to something you’ll never forget.
That was exactly the case for Malissa Sergent Lewis on a warm summer morning in 2016. Running late for work at an elementary school in Kentucky, Malissa chose a shortcut she didn’t usually take — a quiet, less-traveled back road. What she stumbled upon that day would stay with her forever.
The road was empty. No traffic. No people. Just silence — and something unexpected: a black trash bag lying right in the middle of the pavement. Oddly enough, the bag was moving.
“At first, I wasn’t even sure my eyes were playing tricks on me,” Malissa recalled in an interview with The Dodo. “But the closer I got, the more I realized — that bag was definitely shifting.”

Someone had cruelly tied this little dog inside a garbage bag and abandoned him in the road — left to die without a second thought. There’s no telling how long he’d been in there, but the idea of even a few minutes in that situation is unbearable.
Although the puppy had a collar, there were no tags or identifying details. Malissa couldn’t bring herself to just leave him there, so she scooped him up, placed him in her car, and took him with her — straight to school. Later that day, her son picked him up and brought him home. The two then took the puppy to a vet, where he received a full checkup and necessary vaccinations.
The mystery of how he ended up in such a horrific situation remains unsolved. Perhaps he was stolen, perhaps abandoned. Regardless, Malissa did the right thing and reported the incident to local authorities.
But no one ever came forward. The dog wasn’t listed as missing. And in a way, that may have been fate — because Malissa and her family decided to welcome the pup into their home permanently.
What still haunts her, though, is the cruelty of whoever left him there.
“I don’t understand how someone could do that,” she said. “Honestly, how can anyone just throw away a living creature like trash? Puppies are innocent. All animals are. You’d have to be heartless to do something like that.”
Malissa’s simple choice to take a different road ended up saving a life. Had she left even a minute earlier or taken her usual route, that puppy might not have made it.
