It always stings a little deeper when I come across a story of an animal that’s been treated cruelly. It’s beyond comprehension how someone could channel their anger or apathy into hurting a defenseless dog.
Not long ago, two young men were walking through Lanús, a city just outside of Buenos Aires, Argentina, when they noticed something dark and sluggish emerging from a roadside ditch. At first, they couldn’t make out what it was. As they got closer, the truth became painfully clear—it was a dog, completely coated in thick, black tar. Someone had deliberately done this, leaving the poor creature to suffer on his own.
Without hesitation, the two rushed to get help. Fortunately, a police station was close by. An officer joined them, and together they brought the dog to a veterinarian. From there, he was taken into the care of Zoonosis Lanús, a local animal rescue group.
The volunteers at the shelter wasted no time and tried washing the dog, hoping to clean him up quickly. But the tar was unrelenting. It clung to the dog’s skin like hardened glue, refusing to budge, according to a report by CNNEspañol.
Despite their best efforts, traditional cleaning methods failed. But just when hope began to fade, someone came across a tip online that suggested using cooking oil to soften the tar, followed by scraping it off gently with a spatula.
Armed with this new approach, the team got to work. It took five full liters of oil to even make a dent in the thick, toxic mess. After three exhausting hours, only about a third of the tar had come off. Yet, no one gave up. The original rescuers stayed to help, working side by side with the volunteers. Finally, after five long hours, patches of the dog’s fur began to show again.
The dog was affectionately named Petróleo, a nod to the ordeal he endured. While some traces of tar still remain on his coat, the transformation was incredible. And thankfully, he appears to be on the road to recovery. Here’s hoping there are no lasting health effects from the exposure.
It’s nothing short of miraculous that those two young men were in the right place at the right time—and that they cared enough to act. Without them, Petróleo might never have survived.
Now, this sweet dog is searching for a permanent, loving home. His story is just one of countless cases that highlight the ongoing issue of animal cruelty. These acts of abuse must come to an end.
