The topic of pet euthanasia often stirs deep emotions and divided opinions. For some, it’s a heartbreaking but necessary decision made out of compassion; for others, it raises ethical concerns, especially when the animal might still have a fighting chance.
This moral crossroads became a very real situation when a young puppy, born with congenital health issues, was brought into a veterinary clinic in New Zealand. The owner had decided to put the puppy down, believing it to be the kindest option under the circumstances. But instead of carrying out the procedure, veterinarian Oliver Reeve chose a different path—one that would change the puppy’s life forever.
Dr. Reeve shared the experience on social media, writing:
“A 7-week-old pup was brought in tonight to be put to sleep. It’s heartbreaking. But anyway, meet my new son.”
Rather than ending the little dog’s life, Reeve made the decision to adopt him. The story quickly caught fire online, touching hearts and sparking a flurry of reactions. Many people praised the vet’s compassion and criticized the previous owner for giving up on the puppy.
One person commented, “Bringing a healthy animal to be put down is vile. That should be a crime.” Another wrote, “It’s devastating to think someone would consider ending the life of such a sweet dog. I’d probably end up adopting half the clinic if I worked there.”
However, Dr. Reeve was quick to offer a more nuanced perspective. While he understood the emotional response from the public, he reminded everyone that the situation might not be so black-and-white.
He explained that the exact nature of the puppy’s condition would remain private to avoid unfair judgment. “It’s easy to jump to conclusions,” he said. “But the fact is, the owner brought the puppy to a vet. They didn’t abandon him or let him suffer. They sought help. That matters.”
Reeve emphasized that choosing euthanasia isn’t always a sign of cruelty—it can sometimes be a difficult act of love, made when resources or circumstances don’t allow for extensive treatment. “It’s important people know that coming to a vet—even for euthanasia—is far better than letting an animal endure prolonged suffering or being dumped. We’re here to help, not to judge.”
As for the puppy, now named Toby, his journey is just beginning. He recently underwent the first of several surgeries to address his condition, and according to Reeve, he’s recovering well.
“He’s a brave little guy,” Reeve wrote with pride, sharing that Toby will likely need one more surgery in the coming months. “After that, he should be just fine.”
Toby’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact compassion can have. Thanks to one vet’s decision to look beyond a diagnosis and see the soul in front of him, a vulnerable puppy now has a chance to live a full, happy life.
